The communitarian view of leadership is probably articulated best in the works of W. Edwards Deming. To Deming, leadership requires knowledge of processes and an understanding of the variability within the system. From Deming’s perspective, leaders know thatmost of the problems within a system are created by the variability within the system itself, not by the people working in the system. However, individualisticmanagers tend to view leadership from a top down control perspective. The leader specifies the desired results and then rewards or punishes workers on the basisof these specifications. The communitarian leader views workers as colleagues in an adult-adult relationship, while the individualistic leader views therelationship more in terms an adult-child orientation. In a communitarian company, employees work with management. In an individualistic company, employees work for (and sometimes against) management. Notice that a manager’s view of leadership follows logically from the company’s overall structure andpolicies towards employees. (See summary and the summary for more on the problems associated with the individualistic form of leadership).

A lawyer for Middleton did not reply to a request for comment. (When Fisher deposed him this past April, Middleton invoked his Fifth Amendment rights almost 300 times, including to the question of whether he had forged Pursglove’s signature.) A spokesman for Daszkal Bolton told me that the firm would not comment on litigation or client matters. But documents obtained by Fisher suggest that Oesterlund’s lawyers and accountants had indeed spent 2013 trying to make him untouchable, trading complex organizational charts, debating what companies to create in which countries, even what value to assign them.

With that conflict of interest continuing to exist in the auditing profession, and as long as profits are the Holy Grail of capitalism, my optimism is guarded. Do we ever learn? We shall see.

This darkness shields the tax-averse businessman and the criminal alike. Dictators use the offshore system to loot their own countries. Drug lords use it to launder money. As Gabriel Zucman, a University of California economist and an offshore expert, puts it: “They use the same banks, they use the same incorporation agents to create shell companies, they send money in the same ways.”

The Cash for Clunkers program and $8,000 homebuyer tax credit are straight gifts to the automobile and housing industries. Since last spring, the propaganda barrage has been about “green shoots,” and the recession has been declared waning and over by all manner of pundit and official, but the important economic indicators, such as shipping, unemployment, and manufacturing activity, do not show an economic recovery. The is one of the best measures of global economic activity, and it is meandering along a couple of years ago. The United States’s biggest port just had its worst September (usually the year’s best month) . Manufacturing activity .

In the mainstream media (non-USA), the question is finally being asked about (which has been asked for awhile). The media has been covering the recession by focusing on and ignoring Main Street.
